(Washington, DC) – ActForLove.org, a cause-oriented personals service that
lets activists participate in online advocacy and find dates at the same time,
was launched today by Extreme Campaigns. Via its partnership with Spring Street
Networks, the service is able to offer new members access to over 1,000,000
personals, as well as cutting-edge features such as real-time video chat.
“Activism is sexy, activists are sexy, and it’s high time that all humans
were offered a way to ‘take action’ while ‘getting action,’” said John Hlinko,
President of Extreme Campaigns and founder of ActForLove.org. “And, with all the
good causes out there trying desperately to engage new activists – why not do it
by taking advantage of the world’s oldest form of engagement?”
Fighting Political Apathy with Creativity and Humor
Actforlove.org directly addresses the disconnect between apathetic youth and
the political process by promoting the one thing all young people have in common
– their libido. A survey by the National Association of Secretaries of State
found that most young people lack and do not seek out “information and
understanding about the democratic process. After attracting youth to
ActforLove.org, the service then provides them with the targeted information and
activist opportunities they do not seem to be able (or willing) to find anyplace
else.
ActForLove.org will also engage activists with humor – often at the expense
of its opponents – through a series of spotlight actions for a range of
progressive causes. In this spirit, it will launch with a special “Make Love Not
War” effort, headquartered at http://www.rumsfeld.org/. Users can send an
email to the “septuagenarian sex symbol” Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld with the
message, “another vote to make love, not war.” And a portion of the proceeds
will be specifically earmarked towards non-profit organizations working for
peace.
ActForLove.org: How It Works
ActForLove.org aims to make the world a better place and is dedicated to
making politics more interesting for disenfranchised Americans. The service
will: 1) Donate a portion of its proceeds to good causes and activist efforts;
2) Highlight "feature campaigns" on the site (including those chosen by the
votes of ActForLove.org members); 3) Start its own activist campaigns for good
causes that no one else has yet championed, and 4) Build an ever-growing network
of activist singles and turn them into activist doubles.
“ActForLove.org offers people who care about the world a place to meet other
people who care about the world,” said Louis Kanganis, CEO of Spring Street
Networks. “We are delighted to be working with the ActForLove.org team, as they
put a whole new, creative, and eminently cool spin on online dating.”
“It’ll take some time to build up the full promise of this service,” said
Hlinko. “But step by step, one activist at a time, we aim to build an activist
network that enables members to make the world a better place and find their
perfect match at the same time.”
About Extreme Campaigns
Extreme Campaigns specializes in creative, high-impact
campaigns designed to attract, engage, and motivate supporters for causes and
candidates. The firm is led by grassroots campaign expert John Hlinko. Hlinko, a
long-time Internet activist and even longer-time dater, is a veteran of
MoveOn.org, DraftWesleyClark.com, JustSayBlow.com, and a range of other
cause-oriented efforts.
Throughout his career, he has been particularly active on the guerrilla
marketing front, and has appeared in this context on CNN and Fox and been
covered by Wired, Salon.com, and NPR, In 1998, he helped lead MoveOn.org, an
anti-impeachment petition that generated over half a million signatures and
several million dollars in donations. He also founded and led JustSayBlow.com, a
semi-comedic effort against a particularly stupid Drug-War policy. And, he once
showed up in Senator Mitch McConnell's office to lobby for campaign finance
reform dressed as a pile of laundry. For more information, including sample
